John Edward Sutton, 60, of Oskaloosa, died Monday, November 29, 2021. He was born July 31, 1961, in Oskaloosa, the son of Howard and Merna Rice Sutton.

John attended Grant School and Oskaloosa Junior High, then he went on to graduate from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1980. John grew up in Oskaloosa and worked at the Oskaloosa Herald, and Hy-Vee.

Following high school graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army. He served as a MP from 1980 until his honorable discharge in 1983.

John furthered his law enforcement education through Indian Hills Community College upon his return home. He put his law enforcement training to use by serving as a security guard at Chesapeake and Merrill Security, working primarily at Cargill in Eddyville. He worked a short time at Liberty Chrysler Plymouth in Memphis, Tennessee. He later returned to Oskaloosa and worked with his dad at Howard’s Auto Service. In March of 1988, he went to work at Vermeer in Pella, becoming a certified welder. He continued at Vermeer until leaving to go to work at Weiler Manufacturing in Knoxville and retired in February of 2021.

John loved to ride his Harley Davidson Motorcycle. He was a member of the Harley Owners Group from the time he purchased his first Harley in 2004. He also enjoyed target shooting with his friends. He always looked forward to family gatherings and catching up with his nieces and nephews.

His family includes his two sisters and their husbands, Donna and Lyle Collins and Karann and Phil Gervais all of Oskaloosa; nieces and nephews, Lee (Missy) Collins, Leslie (Mike) Hirons, Russell (Kylie) Hessing, Derek Hessing, Renee Hessing, and Hanna Sampsel; eight great nieces and nephews; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held Friday, December 3, 2021, at 10:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Rodney DeRonde officiating.
Graveside Military Honors will be given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W.
Burial will be in the Wymore Cemetery east of Oskaloosa. The family encourages all family and friends attending the visitation and the funeral ceremony to wear a mask. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Thursday after 12 noon in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 6-8 Thursday evening to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made Stephen’s Memorial Animal Shelter.
