Jerome Cornelius Van Den Heuvel, age 84, of Fremont, IA, passed away on Friday, January 7, 2022, at the Oskaloosa Care Center in Oskaloosa, Iowa. He was born May 26, 1937, in Oskaloosa, the son of John and Marie (Groenendyk) Van Den Heuvel. He was raised on his parent’s farm near Cedar, Iowa.
Jerome attended the Oskaloosa Christian Grade School and graduated from Pella Christian High School with the Class of 1954.
Jerome met the love of his life, Marian Den Adel, a bookkeeper who had moved from Pease, Minnesota to Oskaloosa. They were married in Pease on June 13, 1958. They were blessed with a son, Mike and a daughter, Lynn.
Jerome farmed for many years on his farm north of Fremont. He and his wife also owned and operated the Fremont Elevator.
Jerome enjoyed community events and visiting with people. He loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was a charter member of Cedar Christian Reformed Church and attended there his entire life. He served as a council member and was always ready to give of his time and talents.
During the winter for the past 25 years, Jerome and Marian escaped the cold and were winter Texans living in Alamo Palms Resort. While there, Jerome was told of a need for housing for the poverty-stricken people in a Mexican town. He, along with others from Alamo Palms, built 117 homes, giving Bibles to each family that moved into the homes.
Jerome had a special love for that project. Family to Jerome was a joy. He loved his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. His nieces and nephews often thought of him as their 2nd dad.
His family includes his wife of 63 years, Marian Van Den Heuvel; a son, Mike (& Kriste) Van Den Heuvel of Cedar; a daughter, Lynn (& Scott) Koldenhoven of Colorado Springs; 2 grandchildren: Kate (& Adam) De Jong and Grant (& Lacey) Van Den Heuvel; 4 great grandchildren: Cobie and Kaden De Jong and Adleigh and Jaxon Van Den Heuvel; 2 sisters, Yvonne (& Larry) Williams of Texas and Alta (& Dave) Rasmussen of Nebraska; and a sister-in-law, Doris (& Jon) Nibbelink of Iowa.
Jerome was preceded in death by his parents; a sister in infancy, Elizabeth Van Den Heuvel; a brother, Clarence Van Den Heuvel; and a brother-in-law, Jack Van Doeselaar.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 10, 2022, at 1:30 p.m. in the Cedar Christian Reformed Church with Reverend John Ritsema officiating.
Burial will be prior to the funeral ceremony at the Cedar Township Memorial Cemetery south of Fremont. A procession will form at the Fremont Funeral Chapel on Monday at 12:45 for those wishing to attend the graveside service.
Visitation will begin Sunday, January 9, 2022, after 12 noon in the Cedar Christian Reformed Church and the family will be at the Church from 2-4 p.m. to greet friends and family. The Fremont Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the Cedar Christian Reformed Church or the Oskaloosa Christian School.
