Iowa State Auditor Rob Sand files for re-election

Des Moines – Rob Sand filed over 5,000 petition signatures to qualify for the June primary ballot on Wednesday, more than double the number required. Sand was first elected in 2018, the only statewide candidate to defeat an incumbent that year, by pledging to “wake up the watchdog” in the Auditor’s Office.

“Big and powerful interests don’t like to be held accountable. That’s why we have a State Auditor,” said Sand. “In 2018, I promised to put people and public service above partisan interests and that’s what we have done. I’m excited to continue the work of making government more accountable to people.”

Sand has brought a new approach to the Auditor’s Office. His accomplishments in his first term include:

Hiring a tri-partisan leadership team and promoting employees who contributed to his political opponent – because they were the best for the job.

Not hesitating to call out both Democrats and Republicans on the same issues.

Being willing to even fight in court for taxpayers, including beating the University of Iowa at the Iowa Supreme Court with a unanimous decision for transparency.

Spreading good ideas to save taxpayers money across Iowa with the creation of the Public Innovations and Efficiences (PIE) program. By encouraging local governments to share how they are reducing spending, PIE has the potential to save taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars. This program is so successful, it has been copied by the State Auditor of Mississippi.
