Iowa Second Deer Shotgun Season to begin December 10th

Oskaloosa, Iowa- Iowa’s deer First Shotgun season ended today. Iowa’s Second Shotgun season will begin on December 10th, and last until December 18th. According to information on the Iowa DNR Website and information from Mahaska County Recorder Diane Upton Crookham, many area counties still have not reached their Antlerless Deer quota.

In Mahaska County, 222 deer remain of the 1,350 quota. Marion county has 206 deer left in their 2,250 quota, Jasper County has 415 deer left in their 1700 quota, Keokuk County has 912 deer left of the their 1900 quota, Wapello County has 1,298 deer left of their 2,150 quota, and Monroe County has 1,845 left of their 3,000 quota. Poweshiek County has reached their 650 deer quota.

After the second shotgun season ends, residents will still have several other deer hunting opportunities. January Antlerless season is scheduled for January 11th, 2012 to January 29th, 2012. In addition, late muzzleloader is set to begin December 19th, 2011 and end January 10th, 2012.

The Nonresident Holiday season is also set to begin in a couple of weeks. Nonresident Holiday season will begin on December 24th, 2011 and end on January 2nd, 2012. Hunters are reminded of the deer season shooting hours which begin ½ hour before sunrise and end ½ hour after sunset.

In addition to Deer, one more Turkey season remains. The final Archery Only Turkey season will begin December 19th, 2011 and end January 10th, 2012. Shooting hours for final Archery Only Turkey season are ½ hour before sunrise to ½ hour after sunset. Hunters are also reminded that they must report all deer and turkey harvest to the Iowa DNR.

Hunters may purchase their Deer, Turkey, and Trapping licenses as well as tags at the Mahaska County Recorder’s Office on the first floor of the Mahaska County Courthouse.
