The Iowa National Guard has wrapped up its mission to assist in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene in North Carolina, showcasing remarkable dedication and heroic service throughout the operation. As hurricane relief efforts enter a new phase, the contributions of Iowa’s National Guard aircrews have not gone unnoticed, as they worked tirelessly to deliver vital supplies and ensure the safety of those impacted by the disaster.

This past week, after long days of hard work, Iowa National Guard aircrews successfully delivered 12,500 pounds of critical supplies—including gasoline, clean water, blankets, and generators—to the towns of Boone and Yancey County, North Carolina. This effort was part of a larger relief mission aimed at supporting communities in dire need after the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene.

The mission was carried out using the Iowa National Guard’s two CH-47 Chinook helicopters, operated by dedicated aircrews who worked around the clock to aid the residents of North Carolina. Over the past few weeks, these two Chinooks, along with their skilled crew members, transported food and water to affected areas, ensuring that essential resources reached those most in need. Additionally, the aircrews played a critical role in rescue operations.

“Our soldiers displayed incredible dedication to helping the people of North Carolina recover from the devastation left by Hurricane Helene,” said Col. Steven Johnson of the Iowa National Guard. “The tireless work they put in, often under very challenging conditions, exemplifies the values of the Iowa National Guard. We are immensely proud of their bravery and selfless service.”

With much of the region still reeling from the impact of the hurricane, the supply deliveries were a lifeline for the communities affected. Reports indicate that the gasoline delivered was instrumental in powering emergency vehicles and generators, helping local authorities manage ongoing recovery efforts. The blankets and clean water provided by the Guard have been essential in meeting the immediate needs of families who were left without power or clean drinking water.

The support provided by the Iowa National Guard highlights the significant role the National Guard plays during natural disasters, bringing not only resources but also hope to communities grappling with the destruction. In total, the Iowa aircrews’ efforts contributed greatly to stabilizing the situation and supporting the people of Boone and Yancey County as they began their journey to recovery.

As the Iowa National Guard’s mission in support of Hurricane Helene comes to a close, it is important to recognize the immense dedication shown by its soldiers. Their hard work, commitment to saving lives, and support for recovery efforts are a testament to the Guard’s motto of “Always Ready, Always There.”

The communities of Boone and Yancey County have expressed deep gratitude to the Iowa National Guard, with local officials praising the swift and effective response that brought much-needed relief to the area.
