Indians Wrestling Season Comes To An End

by Jamie Brockman

Oskaloosa knew they’d have their work cut out for them to advance anyone to state, competing in a tough Class 3A District wrestling tournament at Des Moines East Saturday.

To no one’s surprise, Southeast Polk dominated the team race, advancing to the Class 3A State Duals on Wednesday, also advancing eleven of their fourteen wrestlers to state.

Ankeny was a distant second in the team race followed by Norwalk, Des Moines East, Ottumwa, Oskaloosa, Pella, and Des Moines Roosevelt.

The top two finishers in each weight earned a spot at next week’s State Wrestling Tournament. Oskaloosa was unable to advance any wrestlers but had four come close.

Salvador Gonzales at 120lbs, Cody Gunn at 160lbs, Emmit Boender at 182lbs and Tyson Breuklander at 220lbs all won their first-round matches, then, were each defeated in the semi-finals. All four won their third-place matches, but the only wrestler who had a chance to wrestle back for a true second-place finish to advance to state was Breuklander, but the Senior lost by fall and had to settle for third place.

Fifth place finishers included Zach Beebe at 132lbs and Wyatt Krier at 145lbs. Sixth place finishes went to Phillip Abrahamson at 113lbs, Jason Garrett at 152lbs and Keegan Mitts-Butler at Heavyweight.

Riley Sirovy at 106lbs, Max Larkins at 126lbs, Leland Evans at 138lbs, and Blake Westercamp at 170lbs did not place for the Indians.

Coach Chase Weber said although no one advances to state, they did wrestle hard all day winning 14 matches and finished at or above their seed in seven of their thirteen weights.
