Indians Softball Wins Big At Grinnell

by Jamie Brockman

The Oskaloosa Softball team traveled to Grinnell Wednesday night and swept the Tigers winning game one 9-1 and the nightcap 5-1. Oskaloosa’s bats are coming alive at the right time of the year as the Indians have now won three straight games since falling to Pella Christian Monday.

In game one, Oskaloosa started strong in the first inning when Ava Vandewall hit a two-out single. Abby Braundmeier drew a walk, then Sophie Dykstra ripped an RBI single scoring Vandewall.

The Indians blew the game open in the second inning scoring five runs starting with a leadoff solo home run to left center field by Maddie Haines, her third dinger of the season. Taylor Wills followed with a single, then Kaylee Johnson sacrificed her over to second. With one out, Meghan Moorman ripped an RBI single scoring Wills. Then with two outs, Vandewall doubled followed by an Abby Braundmeier double that scored Moorman and Vandewall. Hayle Hacker then retired the Tigers in order in the bottom half of the second inning giving the Indians a healthy 6-1 lead after two.

Grinnell scored their lone run in the fifth inning on an RBI single from Megan Doty to pull within 6-1, but the Indians weren’t finished yet as they plated three more runs in the sixth inning. Haines led off the inning with a triple, just missing her second home run of the game. With one out Kaylee Johnson batted her in with an RBI single, Moorman drew a walk and later scored while Vandewall ripped an RBI single.

Oskaloosa scored nine runs on eight hits, committed no errors and stranded eight base runners. Grinnell was limited to one run on six hits, committed one error and stranded six base runners.

The nightcap started a little slower as each team had two hits but couldn’t score through two innings.

That changed in the third inning when Oskaloosa scored three runs on four hits and a Tiger error. With one out, Ashley Kindley singled then was forced out at second base following a ground ball up the middle from Ava Vandewall who was safe on the fielders choice. With two outs, Abby Braundmeier then singled, Sophie Dykstra had an RBI, while Faith Deronde drove in a run on a single, and Maddie Haines singled home a run giving the Indians a 3-0 lead.

The Indians added another run in the top of the fourth inning when Kaylee Johnson led off with a base hit. Then with two outs, Vandewall hit a single scoring Johnson. Grinnell scored their lone run in the fourth inning on two hits and an Osky error. Osky added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning when Kindley led off with a single and was brought home on an RBI single from Dykstra. Faith Deronde then finished things in the bottom of the seventh striking out the first two batters faced, before giving up a single and got the last batter to fly out to right field ending the game with a 5-1 Osky win.

Oskaloosa scored five runs on 12 hits, committed one error and stranded seven runners on base while Grinnell scored one run on six hits, committed two errors and stranded six base runners.

Braundmeier singled and scored, Dykstra had two singles, reached on an error and 2 RBI, Deronde had an RBI single. Haines had an RBI single, Wills had a single, and Kaylee Johnson had a single and scored a run.

These were two big conference wins for several reasons. Coming in, Oskaloosa stood at 3-7 in the LHC and had lost a home game earlier to Grinnell. Tonight, they avenged that loss and won the series, and are now back in the hunt of the LHC at 5-7.

Oskaloosa improved to 14-9 overall and 5-7 in conference play and return home Thursday night to face DC-G at 7:30 pm, a team they split with earlier at DC-G.
