Indians Freshman Squad Wraps Season Up At South Tama

Oskaloosa Indians

by Coach Todd Miller

The Oskaloosa Freshman football team traveled to South Tama for their last game of the year. The team ended up finishing strong by winning the game 55-6. This win gave the team a 7-1 record on the year and the mythical district co-champs as Pella, Newton and Osky all lost one game. This is a great group of kids that will be moving up to the varsity level next year.

The Freshman defense started out playing great team defense and continued that throughout the game. Coach Howard named the starting lineup as the Defensive Player of the game as they were able to take over the contest. The defense held South Tama to 50 yards of rushing and 0 yards passing during the game. Their only score came on a Kick off Return or else it would have been a shut-out. The defense also caused and recovered four fumbles, and they had an interception to help give the ball back to the offense on several different occasions. One of those fumble recoveries also led to a scoop and score for the defense as Bobby Opheim took the ball 20 yards for the touchdown.

Leading the defense was Colin Snitker with 12 tackles and 3 TFL, Darryl Fane with 8 and 2 TFL, Bobby Opheim with 6 and a strip and a fumble recovery, Devin Bloodsworth with 6, David Nelson with 5 a sack and a strip, Dawson Braden with 5, Landon Hunolt with 4, Dalton Plate with 3, Warren Feudner with 3, Andres Chavez with 3, Khyadin Yang with 2, Ryan Hafner with 2 and a fumble recovery, Bryce Beerbower with 2 and a TFL, Blake Westercamp with 1 and 2 fumble recoveries, Carson Genskow with 1 and an interception, Christian Cavan with 1, De Ante Cross with 1, and Donivan Tighe with 1 tackle to complete the defensive stats. Colin Snitker ended up being the second highest freshman in tackles since 2009 with 85 tackles during the eight-game shortened season.

The offense had several people jumping in to take part of the credit for scoring points as well. In the run game, the offensive line consisting of Blake Westercamp, Warren Feudner, Will Campbell, Christian Cavan, and Dawson Braden was on fire as they were opening up huge holes for the running backs. Darryl Fane had 16 carries for 154 yards, Colin Snitker had 13 carries for 90 yards, Will Schultz had 8 carries for 169 yards, and 3 touchdown runs, Donivan Tighe had a 33-yard run for a touchdown, Devin Bloodsworth had 2 carries for 14 yards, and Bobby Opheim had a 5-yard touchdown run as well. These players added up to a total of 465 yards of rushing for the team.

The line also blocked well enough to have Will Shultz throw two passes to David Nelson for 18 yards, 1 to Carson Genskow for an 8-yard touchdown, 1 to Colin Snitker for 17 yards and 1 to Landon Hunolt for a 4-yard touchdown.

The offensive side ended up scoring 328 points for the year which is an average of 41 points per game with eight different players scoring for the team. They also ended up with 3260 yards of total offense which is over 400 yards of offense per game.

The Freshman football banquet is scheduled for Thursday night as we plan on wrapping up a great season for the young Indian squad.
