Indians Down Ranked Opponent

Oskaloosa Indians

The Indians were in action on a very windy night against #14 ranked and 8-1 Fairfield. The Indians would be playing in to the wind in the first half, but did not allow the weather affect them as they came out strong. Although the girls controlled the ball for most of the 1st half, they couldn’t find the back of the net until Aleeya Cheney put away a free kick from Brittany DeMoney with 8 minutes left in the half. The score would remain the same at halftime.

“We told the girls that with the strong winds, the biggest thing was to ensure balls didn’t go over our head and to pass to feet. The wind can be a huge equalizer, but we didn’t let that affect us as we controlled pretty well and were able to score against the wind which always helps boosting enthusiasm going into the 2nd half.”

With the wind at their back, the Indians would pick up where they left off at halftime and continue to control a large majority of the half, but again struggling to find the back of the net. It was in the 44th minute that Leah VanMaanen took a pass from Ashley Brockman and fired from 30 yards out. With a little more breathing room, Osky continued to push and would add two more goals, Cheney in the 53rd minute and Zoie VerBeek (assist from VanMaanen) in the 78th minute for a final score of 4-0. The Indians move their record to 5-4 on the year.

The defense of Brooke Engelhardt, Mac McCallum, Brittany DeMonday, Claire Fiechtner and Maddy Crile did an amazing job of containing one of the top scorers in the state. “We had a game plan as far as defense and the girls did an amazing job of executing that plan and containing a girl who has almost 30 goals this year. Maddy did a great job in goal coming up with two huge saves to preserve the shutout.”
