Indians Dismantle Centerville

Oskaloosa Indians

by Jodi Steinlage

The Girls’ soccer team overcame a slow first half with an explosive 2nd half to beat Centerville 8-0 Thursday night. The win moves the Indians to 4-1 on the season.

The Indians would continue the trend of a quick score when Aleeya Cheney finished a pass from Kinsey Cook just 2 minutes into the match. The Indians would then go ice cold in finishing the remainder of the half. There were opportunities, but the Indians couldn’t find the back of the net.

“The girls were able to dominate much of the 1st half, but our energy was lacking when it came to being aggressive and playing the way we know how to. We challenged the girls to come out and play with their full selves and they delivered in the 2nd half.”

The 2nd half would find a completely different Oskaloosa team as they would go on to score 7 goals in the first 17 minutes. Goals would be scored by Emily Lunsford (assist Kirby Nelson), Mary Nelson (assist Lunsford), Cheney (own goal for Centerville), M. Nelson (assist Cheney), Cheney (assist M. Nelson, Brittany DeMoney, and Attie Teeter (assist Cheney).

“The girls took our challenge to heart and came out and dominated. Scoring 7 goals in 17 minutes shows what kind of soccer they can play when they put their mind to it. The last part of the 2nd half, we were able to get a lot of girls in and get some experience which was nice. We just need to learn how to play that type of soccer for a full 80 minutes. The defense was strong and kept the ball in the Centerville side of the field for most of the game.”

The girls have a couple days to prepare for 12th ranked Newton next Tuesday. Game time is JV at 5:30 and Varsity to follow in Newton.
