Indians Defeat Newton At Home

Oskaloosa Indians

by Jodi Steinlage

Last night was a beautiful night for soccer and the Indians came ready to play against the Newton Cardinals which would end with a 2-1 win and the girls’ first ever soccer victory against Newton. The win evens their record at 2-2 (1-1 in conference).

The girls would put together their best half of soccer this year in the 1st half and would find the back of the net just over the half way point when Senior, Aleeya Cheney, would put a free kick right on goal. The Newton goalie was unable to control the ball and Sophomore, Abby Lumsden, would fire home the rebound (asset to Cheney and Junior, Emily Richmond) to go up 1-0. The score would remain that way until half.

“We were really happy with how well the girls came out and played soccer in the 1st half. We were doing everything we needed to do to be successful. It was a really fun half to watch.”

The 2nd half was all about digging deep and finding whatever was left in the tank. Newton would come out ready to battle and would fire off a shot in the 57 minute to even the score 1-1. It was a back and forth battle for the last 20 minutes with both teams having opportunities to take the lead. With just over 2 minutes left in the game, the Indians put together three passes with Senior, Brooke Engelhardt finding Richmond and Richmond crossing the ball to Sophomore, Lindy Slocum, who would slide it past the Newton keeper for the game winner.

“Newton came out strong in the 2nd half and we were on our heels for a bit. After they scored, I was very proud with the girls in how they found their composure and went back to what we had been doing in the 1st half. Over the last few years, we have been close to picking up these big wins, but have never been able to seal the deal against the top teams in our conference. Tonight, the girls dug deep and left everything on the field. Looking forward to see what this team can do if we come to play like this every night.”

The girls will be back in action tomorrow night with a double header with the boys at home against Centerville with game time at 5:30. Come enjoy a 2 for 1 and get to see both teams in action!
