IHCC Announces Earn and Learn Scholarship Opportunity

-Service and Retail Workers Negatively Affected by COVID-19 are Eligible to Apply-

Ottumwa, IA – Indian Hills Community College has received a state Coronavirus Relief Employer Innovation Fund Grant to help individuals in the service and retail industries, who have been negatively affected by COVID-19, retrain for entry level careers in advanced manufacturing. Selected participants will not only receive free tuition for the program, but also a stipend to help with living expenses during the course of their studies.

Selected students will enroll in the Production Specialist program at Indian Hills. Over the course of the program students will earn the industry recognized CPT (Certified Production Technician) credential as well as receive OSHA 10 certification. In addition, they will participate in courses on general workplace skills, personal finance and resume building. Graduates of the program will be connected with area employers who have agreed to review the resumes of all completers.

In addition to receiving free tuition for the program, participants will also receive a stipend that they can use toward their living expenses while they are enrolled. Ashley Moyer, Executive Director of Continuing Education and Workforce Solutions commented, “We know that a common barrier for adults who would like to come back to school is lack of income during the time they are training. We hope that by providing this stipend we can give individuals who have experienced a job loss or reduction in hours due to COVID-19 the extra little bump they need to be able to make taking the time to retrain feasible for themselves and their families.”

Dr. Jill Budde, VP of Learning and Engagement added, “Advanced manufacturing is the number one business sector in the state of Iowa. In our area, advanced manufacturers provide some of the highest hourly wages and very competitive benefit packages. This program provides a real opportunity for graduates to quickly get their foot in the door in a place where they will have great growth opportunity.”

The Production Specialist program will start on October 19th and run through January 21st. Individual interested in the program must fill out a brief application and set-up a time to talk with the scholarship committee during the week of October 12th.
