Howard Clayton Thompson, 80, of Oskaloosa passed away Saturday, December 24, 2022, at his home in Oskaloosa. He was born on October 3, 1942, in Mahaska County, Iowa, the son of Simon and Grace (Blake) Thompson.

Howard attended school in Oskaloosa until age 12 when his family moved to Illinois where he attended Eastern Moline Schools. Howard later moved back to Iowa.

Howard served in the United States Army from 1961 until 1964.

On August 22, 1964, he was united in marriage to Ellen McMillian at the Beacon Methodist Church.

Howard worked for International Harvester and Polevarde Construction while in Illinois and also worked as a construction contractor for different businesses. After returning to Iowa, he remained doing contract work for others until opening his own construction business. He also worked for Oskaloosa Engineering for several years, but returned to work in construction until retiring in 2004.

Howard was a member of the Oskaloosa VFW. He enjoyed camping at the river, fishing, deer hunting, and gardening. He was an NASCAR fan and enjoyed watching golf, old westerns, and the Iowa Hawkeyes.

His family includes his wife, Ellen Thompson of Oskaloosa; his children: Michael Thompson of Des Moines, Michele Thompson of Franklin, TN, and Melinda Barnes of Des Moines; his siblings: Margaret Faye Gorman of Kentucky, Jerry (& Sharon) Thompson of Beacon, Peggy Bowman of Oskaloosa and Becky (& Easman) Poe of Beacon; a sister-in-law, Lucille Thompson of Beacon; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers: Robert Thompson, Jack Thompson and Rodger Thompson; and a sister, Grace Ellen Kennedy.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 29, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa.
Military Honors will be given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and VFW. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Wednesday morning after 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel with the family present from 4-6 p.m. Wednesday evening to greet friends and family.
As was his wish, Howard’s body will be cremated after services.
Memorials may be made to the Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter.
