DECORAH—Luther College drilled 11 of 18 three-point goals, overwhelming the Central College women’s basketball team 71-52 Wednesday night in an Iowa Conference clash.

The Norse hit 50 percent from long range in the first half and utilized a 9-0 surge to take a 29-22 lead at the break. Luther opened the second half with a 12-2 run to go up 17, and knocked down 5-of-6 shots behind the arc to maintain a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

“We threw the whole book at Luther defensively but they flat-out outworked us and knocked down shots,” coach Mike Jacobsma said.

Dutch guard Kenzie Vander Molen (sophomore, Pella) hit 7-of-10 shots for a game-high 17 points. Guard Courtney Kelderman (junior, Pella) followed with six points. Guard Annie Sarcone (junior, Des Moines, Dowling Catholic HS) collected six rebounds and forward Nicole Strasko (senior, Roland, Roland-Story HS) had five boards.

Luther (13-9 overall, 5-6 conference) placed four players in double digits and shot 38.3 percent for the game. Central (10-12 overall, 3-8 conference) shot 34 percent, including 26.7 percent from long range, and committed 16 turnovers. The Norse held a 48-35 advantage on the glass.

“I was happy with only 16 turnovers but we’ve got to defend better than we did tonight and we’ve got to hit some shots when we get an opportunity,” Jacobsma said. “We need to put a whole game together.”

Central travels to Dubuque Saturday for a league women’s-men’s doubleheader with the University of Dubuque starting at 2 p.m. The Spartans are 15-7 overall with a 5-6 league mark after dropping a 70-58 decision at Buena Vista Wednesday. Dubuque was a 77-71 winner over Central Jan. 16.

Both contests can be heard on KRLS-FM (92.1) with Cory Houser calling the action. The broadcasts can also be accessed at or
