William Penn University Athletics

Oskaloosa–The William Penn Sports Information office is taking one final look back at the stories that made the 2016-2017 school year so memorable! Today’s listing includes the honorable-mentions, highlighting the best moments of many of our sports teams.

–Behind all-Heart performers freshman Zachary Chegwidden and junior Frederik Lundsgaard, the men’s golf team recorded its best league finish since joining the NAIA in 2001. The Statesmen tied for second at the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championships, while Chegwidden, who was also a Ping all-region performer (believed to be first in school history), competed in a playoff for medalist honors which would have gained him a berth to nationals.

–After dropping its first three games, the football squad reeled off a seven-game winning streak to not only share the Heart North title, but also compete for a postseason berth in the final week of the season. A total of 11 players, in addition to Head Coach Todd Hafner, were named all-Heart performers.

–Freshman Nenad Markovic paced the Statesmen men’s soccer team to a solid campaign as he produced one of the best individual seasons in program history. The first-team all-Heart selection and Newcomer of the Year tallied 15 goals which were one shy of the school record.

–Freshman Bailey Palmer guided the WPU women’s bowling team to its eighth-consecutive sectionals tournament. The Statesmen managed six top-10 efforts.

–Sophomore John Altieri won the first qualifying group title in seven years for the wrestling team. The title netted him a bid to his second trip to nationals.

–Freshman women’s track and field athlete Asia Laudermilch was a record-breaking speedster, snapping all three indoor sprint marks.

–Emily Brown finished a strong season by being named first-team all-Heart as well as NFCA second-team all-region. The junior was joined on the all-conference squads by Kodee Johnson, Chyanne Koko, and Michelle Castro–all of whom where second-teamers.

–The women’s soccer team, headlined by second-team all-Heart player Alyce Correia (senior) and third-team pick Mariah Voight (sophomore), knocked off rival Grand View in the league tournament.

–The trio of senior Jeysen Delgado (first team) and juniors Anthony Aguila (second team) and Julian Villegas (honorable mention) all garnered all-Heart recognition for their strong baseball campaigns.

–Junior women’s cross country runner Guadalupe Gonzalez highlighted her women’s cross country season by breaking into the school’s top 10 list in both the three-mile and 6K. She was also a Heart Runner of the Week.

–Sophomore Ashley Miller executed the role of the volleyball team’s libero to near perfection as she claimed honorable-mention all-Heart accolades.

–A total of four cheer and dance student-athletes earned NAIA Scholar-Athlete recognition, including junior Kaitlyn Pearson who was honored on both teams.
