MANKATON, MINN. — Senior guard Jessica Helton (Nevada) was the leading scorer for the Central College women’s basketball team in an 82-74 loss to Bethany Lutheran College (Minn.) Saturday evening.

Helton had a season-high 14 points and two assists.

Central (2-2) had 25 turnovers which led to 30 points for Bethany Lutheran (4-0).

“They forced a lot of turnovers and scored a lot of baskets in transition,” said coach Joe Steinkamp.

The Dutch took an 18-15 lead into the second quarter before the Vikings stormed back with a 31-14 quarter, to take a 46-32 halftime lead.

“The second quarter really hurt us tonight,” said Steinkamp. “They were on fire and we missed a ton of open looks during their runs.”

Senior guard Emily Dine (Oldsmar, Fla., East Lake HS) had 13 points, senior forward Jackie Kriegel (Marengo, Iowa Valley HS) had 11 points and 12 rebounds, her second statistical double-double of the season, senior forward Tina Lane (Williamsburg) added 11 points off the bench and junior guard Kaitlyn Johnson (Stockport, Van Buren HS) chipped in 11 points including, 3-of-6 from beyond the arc.

Central’s two losses have come in the last seven days, both coming at the hands of Bethany Lutheran.

“I thought we played extremely hard and never gave up,” said Steinkamp. “We will continue to get better.”

The Dutch start Iowa Conference play Wednesday night with a trip to Decorah for a women’s-men’s doubleheader against Luther College with the women beginning at 6 p.m. The Norse won both games last season and are 2-3 this season.
