Helen Hargis, 97 of New Sharon went home to be with her Lord and Savior Friday evening, August 23, 2019 at her home in New Sharon. Helen May Hargis, the daughter of Orin and Amy (Loving) McMains, was born on March 21, 1922 in Adams Township, Mahaska County, near New Sharon, Iowa.

Helen graduated from the 8th grade at Darland Country School, later receiving her GED.

On February 27, 1941, Helen was united in marriage to Caleb Hargis in Mahaska County. To this union five children were born, Elaine, Terry, Jim, Melanie and C.E. II.

Helen was a homemaker and a wonderful farm wife that took care of her family. Once their children were a little older, Helen worked as a nurse’s aide for a few years before working as a dental assistant for Dr. Gary Coleman in New Sharon.

Helen was a very caring person and enjoyed helping others. Gentle in spirit and full of grace are some of the qualities that endeared her to so many. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great grandmother and loved preparing Sunday dinners for her family. She was known for her delicious, beautiful pies. Helen also enjoyed quilting, gardening, reading, traveling and fishing with her husband, Caleb.

At the age of 18, Helen was baptized and became a long-standing member of the Union Mills Christian Church, where she served in various positions, including Board Secretary, Sunday School and Bible School teacher, and Elder. She was a long-time member of the Christian Women Fellowship (C.W.F) and their farming community neighborhood club, the M.P.H. Club.

Her memory is honored by her children: Elaine (& Charles) Johnston of Goshen, New York, Melanie (& Joseph) Blunk of Fremont and C.E. (& Debra) Hargis II of New Sharon; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Hargis of New Sharon; eight grandchildren: O. Adam Johnston of Williams, Oregon, Ben (& Tara) Conover of Lynnville, Angela (& Patrick) Patterson of Walford, Annie (& Brent) Mossman of New Sharon, Nick (& Stephanie) Hargis of Westcliffe, Colorado, Abby (& Clint) McDonald of Pella, Andy (& Melanie) Hargis of New Sharon, and Jessica (& Jaroed) Sanders of Montezuma; 20 great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Caleb Hargis; a son, James “Jim” Hargis; a son in infancy, Terry Paige Hargis; and three sisters: Gladys “Irene” Shaw, Luella “Edith” Puffinbarger and Georgia “Opal” Hull.

Funeral services will begin at 2:00 pm Friday, August 30, 2019 at the Union Mills Christian Church.
Burial will be held in the Union Mills Cemetery at Union Mills. Holland-Coble Funeral Home of New Sharon is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be held Thursday, August 29, 2019 from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in New Sharon then from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Union Mills Christian Church with the family present.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Union Mills Christian Church or a memorial of your choice.
