Helen Lucille Walker, 96, of St. Joseph, Missouri, and formerly of Eddyville and Ottumwa, Iowa, died Sunday, January 19, 2020, at the Living Community of St. Joseph, Missouri. She was born May 18, 1923, the daughter of Frank G. and Marvana Sytsma Peters.

Helen graduated from Tracy High School with the class of 1941.

On January 14, 1942, she was united in marriage to Charles L. Walker at Kirksville, Missouri. To this union five children were born, Charles, Georgina, Duane, Dennis, and Darwin.

Following their marriage Helen stayed home to help Charles on the farm and care for their home and family. She always had a large vegetable garden and enjoyed sewing and baking.

On March 28, 2000, Charles died after over 58 years of marriage. Following Charles’ death, Helen moved to Ottumwa. In 2016, she moved to St. Joseph, Missouri to be closer to her daughter.

Her family includes her children: Georgina (& Paul) Fortune of Dearborn, Missouri; Duane Walker of Woodstock, Illinois; Dennis (& Pat) Walker of Morristown, Tennessee; and Darwin (& Karen) Walker of Washington, D.C.; a sister in law, Dorothy Walker of Grimes, Iowa; grandchildren: Louis Payton Jr., Darin Payton, Shawna Johnson, Jennifer Walker, Stephanie Walker, Steve Walker, Lottie Walker and Joshua Walker; two step grandchildren: Jeffrey Fortune and Jill Thompson; fourteen great grandchildren; six great great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Charles; Helen was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Charles Franklin Walker; a granddaughter, Tywanna Lynn Payton; a great granddaughter, Rebecca Payton; and a daughter in law, Patricia Walker.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 8, 2020, at 11:00 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating.
Burial will be in the Bellefountaine Cemetery near Tracy, Iowa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation with the family present will be held Saturday, February 8, 2020, from 9:30 a.m. until service time at 11:00.
Memorials may be made to Mosaic Hospice of St. Joseph Missouri.
