Harris L. Van Wyk, 56, of Oskaloosa, died suddenly on Monday morning, February 3, 2014, at the Mahaska Hospital.

Harris was born October 10, 1957 at Oskaloosa, the son of Bernard and Dora M. Duinink Van Wyk.

Harris graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1976, and later attended Indian Hills Community College.

In the 1980’s and 1990’s, Harris worked at Supersweet Feeds. Later, he hauled and sold firewood and dabbled in scrap and salvage items. He often mowed lawns and did snow removal, mostly on a volunteer basis. Harris had a deep feeling of community volunteerism and contributed many volunteer hours to groups including the Center for Independent Living and the Brain Injury Support Group.

Harris enjoyed tending his vegetable garden and a wide variety of produce, which he gave away to family and friends. Harris was a fan of sprint car races, both in Oskaloosa and Knoxville. He enjoyed attending auctions, especially antique’s. As a final act of kindness and generosity, Harris thoughtfully chose to be a tissue donor.

His family includes his son and his wife: Steve and Nicole Van Wyk of Odin, Minnesota; two grandchildren: Kahsen and Lynnzae Van Wyk, all of Odin; his mother, Dora Van Wyk of Oskaloosa; a brother: Lowell Van Wyk, of Oskaloosa; a sister: Elaine Van Wyk, of Fremont; and a good friend: Mary R. Stout of Oskaloosa.

He was preceded by his father, Bernard Van Wyk.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 8, 2014, at 11 a.m. in the Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa with the Reverend Case Van Kempen officiating.
