Harold Van Veldhuizen, 97, of Pella, passed away Friday, August 20, 2021, at The Cottages in Pella, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on June 24, 1924 on a farm near Harvey, Iowa, the son of Cornie and Jeanette (Roorda) Van Veldhuizen.
Harold attended Cedar Schools until 8th grade.
On February 6, 1947 he was united in marriage to Wilma Boender at the First Christian Reformed Church in Oskaloosa. To this union 4 children were born, Darrel, James, Nancy and Greg. Wilma passed away in 1991.
On June 13, 1992, Harold was united in marriage to Leona Bloem Van Arendonk at the First Christian Reformed Church in Oskaloosa.
Harold was a lifelong farmer. He farmed in both Mahaska and Wapello County. He was currently attending Liberty Free Evangelical Church in Pella. Harold was also a member of Gideons International.
Harold enjoyed antique tractors and went on numerous tractor rides. He also enjoyed traveling and spending winters in Arizona. His real joy in life was spending time with family and friends.
His family includes his wife, Leona Van Veldhuizen of Pella; his 3 children: Darrel (& Beverly) Van Veldhuizen of Eddyville, James (& Jeanette) Van Veldhuizen of Chambersburg, PA., Nancy (& David) Diehl of Des Moines; a daughter-in-law, Loraine Van Veldhuizen; 11 grandchildren: Melissa Eaton of Eddyville, LeAnne (& Norman) Walker of River Falls, WI., Mary Ruth (& Matt) Brunton of Newburgh, IN., Rachel (& Troy) Young of Mercersburg, PA., Elisabeth (& Aaron) Flinner of Darlington, PA., Philip (& Bethany) Van Veldhuizen of Dresher, PA., Jonathan (& Dani) Van Veldhuizen of Sterling, KS., Air Force Lt. Col. Joshua (& Lt. Col. Ginny) Diehl of Troy, IL., Seth Diehl of Iowa City, Jennifer (& Mike Leffler) Whitaker of Ankeny and Jacqueline (& Andy) Teeple of Altoona; 24 great grandchildren; a step son, Dan (& Vicki) Van Arendonk of Oskaloosa; 4 step grandchildren and 12 step great grandchildren; a sister, Carolyn Van Wyk of Pella; a sister-in-law, Darlene Veldhuizen.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Wilma Veldhuizen; a son, Greg Van Veldhuizen; and 2 brothers, Melvin and Edwin Veldhuizen.
A celebration of Harold’s life will be held Tuesday, August 24, 2021, at 10:30 a.m. in the Liberty Evangelical Free Church in Pella, Iowa, with Pastor Dane Schaudt officiating. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will be held Monday, August 23, beginning at 11:00 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with the family present from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Monday evening to greet relatives and friends.
