GRINNELL’S LAURA KRULL NAMED TO ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA AT-LARGE SECOND TEAM

GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College’s Laura Krull ’13 (New Braunfels, Texas/Keystone National) has already established herself as one of the top women’s tennis players in the nation.

Now she is being honored as one of the best in the classroom.

Krull garnered N CAA Division III Academic All-America honors today, earning a spot on the second team. The award is presented by Capital One and the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

She is the 25th student-athlete in Grinnell history to be earn the prestigious honor. Krull is just the third Pioneer to collect Academic All-America honors in the At-Large category.

The At-Large category includes the following sports: women’s bowling, women’s crew, men’s and women’s fencing, women’s field hockey, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s gymnastics, men’s and women’s ice hockey, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s rifle, men’s and women’s skiing, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s volleyball, men’s and women’s water polo and men’s wrestling.

Krull is the third Pioneer in the past two years to be named Academic All-America, as diver Kelly Bruce ’12 and baseball player Mike Nodzenski ’12 received the honor in 2012.

Krull, a sociology major, made history this spring by becoming the first Pioneer woman to earn a spot in the NCAA D-III National Tennis Championships. Last fall, Krull became the first-ever Grinnell woman to win the USTA/ITA Regional title. By winning, she advanced to the National Tourney where she placed sixth.

Krull finished 18-5 in singles play this season.
