Grinnell Men’s Basketball Falls to Kalamazoo in Season Opener
KALAMAZOO, MI — The Grinnell College men’s basketball team started their season with a spirited effort against Kalamazoo on November 9, but ultimately fell short, losing 130-115 at the Anderson Athletic Center. Despite a strong second-half surge, the Pioneers couldn’t overcome an early deficit created by Kalamazoo’s high shooting efficiency and strong defensive plays.
Grinnell’s Gabe Garcia led the team with 41 points, including 16 successful free throws. Kai Te Huki added 17 points, and Nick Lundy contributed with 9. Grinnell’s bench played a significant role, chipping in 34 points to keep the game competitive. Despite out-rebounding Kalamazoo on second-chance opportunities, Grinnell struggled to keep pace with Kalamazoo’s shooting accuracy, which held steady at nearly 65% for the game.
Kalamazoo’s Lukas Broadsword was the standout for the Hornets, scoring 32 points without missing a field goal. Patrick Perez and Carter Bandemer also made key contributions, with Perez adding 24 points and a game-high 10 assists, while Bandemer chipped in 17 points.
