Grinnell issues challenge to rival cities: Beat Grinnell and win $500 for school

GRINNELL– Grinnell is challenging those in rival school districts, betting that no other town can get even half as many Grinnell Games participants as Grinnell can. And there’s $500 at stake for the winning school.
Everyone who signs up for a Grinnell Games event is asked to list the high school they support in the team name blank on the entry form. Each vote for Grinnell-Newburg High School counts as 1 point, while votes for any other high school count for 2 points. The school that racks up the most points will be awarded $500, a traveling trophy and bragging rights!
“Challenging our rivals is a fun way to encourage school spirit and get people fired up about the Grinnell Games,” said Emily Counts, event organizer. “We’ll see if there’s a school out there than can actually beat Grinnell and win the $500!”
Those wanting to support a school should sign up for any Grinnell Games event online at www.grinnellgames.com. Participants should make sure to specify the school they support in the team name blank on the entry form.
The winning school must have a minimum of 20 supporters registered to be eligible for the $500 prize, which will go toward a project determined by that team’s participants and school administration.

Grinnell Games, June 7-9, is Iowa’s Family Sports Festival. The event features athletic events for all ages and abilities. 2013 marks the fourth year of the Grinnell Games, and more than 2,000 people are expected to participate this year. New in 2013 is the Twilight Trail Run, a 10k race around the lake at Rock Creek State Park at sunset on Friday evening. The popular half marathon and 5k run are Saturday morning, looping through Grinnell’s historic neighborhoods and beautiful downtown. Form a team and compete in The Amazing Chase, a wacky afternoon of riddles and challenges that will test your skills both physically and mentally–a great way to explore the city. Celebrate at the block party on Main Street with live music, a beverage garden and activities for the kids, all while cheering on the racers in the fast-paced Twilight Bike Criterium, which loops through downtown. Finally, test your limits in the fierce Warrior Run on Sunday morning. The 5k race includes more than a dozen obstacles that will leave runners soaking wet and caked in mud.
