PELLA—Forward Matt Greenfield (junior, Huxley, Ballard HS) had his sixth-straight outing with a double-digit effort scoring 31 points, but the Central College men’s basketball team suffered an 87-76 Iowa Conference defeat against Coe College Thursday night.

Greenfield went on a 12-point run in the second half hitting 5 of 10 shots from behind the arch and sinking 58.7 percent of his shots from the field for the game. Greenfield also had a team-high nine rebounds. It was his third 30-point performance of the season.

“Matt played really well,” coach Craig Douma said. “He had a big second half and the team did a good job of finding him. He made some big things happen for the team. Matt is playing really hard for us.”

The Dutch (9-10 overall, 2-7 conference) stayed close with the Kohawks (12-8 overall, 5-4 conference) until a 12-4 burst from Coe pushed Central behind in the first. The Dutch closed out the half trailing by 18 points, 46-28. The Dutch were outshot 55.6 percent to 46 percent for the game and outrebounded 34-25.

“Coe shot the ball well tonight,” Douma said. “We had shots, we got looks and we took care of the ball but we didn’t shoot well. We have to get it in the hole.”

Central had three other players in double digits. Center Jacob Winkler (senior, Lancaster, Mo., Schuyler R-1 HS) scored 12 points. Guards Nick Marinkovich (senior, Clarendon Hills, Ill., Hinsdale Central HS) and Branden Stubbs (junior, Pleasant Hill, Des Moines Christian HS) had 11 points and 10 points, respectively.

“This game was a combination of Coe hitting its shots and our poor defensive effort,” said Douma. “We weren’t able to finish.”

Central plays host to Wartburg College (11-8 overall, 6-3 conference) in a women’s-men’s doubleheader Saturday at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium. Both games will be televised live on KCRG-TV’s digital channel 9.2 in Cedar Rapids and can also be viewed via www.kcrg.com. The contests will also be broadcast on KRLS-FM (92.1) and www.kniakrls.com. The men are scheduled to tipoff at 4 p.m. The Dutch were defeated at Wartburg Jan. 9, 86-78.
