Oskaloosa–The William Penn volleyball team overcame an injury of a starter to sweep Iowa Wesleyan 3-0 in non-conference action Thursday.

The Statesmen (10-14), who won by scores of 25-18, 25-20, 25-11, outhit the Tigers by a .246-.029 margin.

The navy and gold tallied the night’s first three points and trailed just once to Iowa Wesleyan (4-12) in the first set. Starter Kristal Campos (Jr., Lancaster, Calif., Sociology) went down with an injury in the initial set, but it did not slow down the home squad.

The second set was a tight one. William Penn went up 4-1, but neither side led by more than two points until the very end. Up 21-20, the Statesmen scored on a sideout and then Kylie Giger (So., Elkhart, Ind., Exercise Science) served up back-to-back aces. Jeanette Cunningham (Sr., Mt. Orab, Ohio, Elementary Education) finished it off with a kill, one of seven for the senior.

The hosts recorded ten of the first 11 points in the third and final set and cruised to the win.

Giger, who led all players with a .444 clip, and Shawni Wills (Fr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Biology) topped William Penn with ten kills each. Wills and Giger both recorded four aces, while Giger also had four blocks (one solo, three assists).

Alanna Connors (Sr., Libertyville, Ill., Biology) matched Cunningham with seven kills.

Dayna Sammons (Jr., Menomonee Falls, Wis., Software Engineering) assisted on 20 winners in two sets as the starter. She was replaced by Leyra Jusino (So., Bayamon, P.R., General Biology) in the second set and finished with 11 assists of her own. Danielle Breeher (So., St. Louis, Mo., Undecided) managed 17 digs on the defensive end.

Next: William Penn hosts Waldorf and Grinnell in a triangular Saturday. The Statesmen face Waldorf at 4:30 p.m. and Grinnell at 7:30 p.m.
