Gary Lindgren, 66, of Oskaloosa died Monday, July 28, 2014, at the MHP Emergency Room in Oskaloosa. He was born February 12, 1948, at Red Oak, Iowa the son of Elmer “Sam” and Dorothy Johnson Lindgren.

Gary graduated from Stanton High School with the class of 1966. He furthered his education at Iowa State University earning a degree in Agronomy in 1970. On June 20, 1970, he was united in marriage to Linda Anderson at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Albia.

In 1967, Gary began his career as a soil scientist with the USDA, he retired from there in 2004 after 37 years of service. In 1970, he joined the United States Army Reserves, he retired with the rank of Staff Sargent in 2008.

In 2003, Gary and Linda moved to Oskaloosa. Gary gave generously of his time and talents to many organizations in Oskaloosa and Mahaska County including: Share Iowa and Nelson Pioneer Farm, where he was currently serving on the board of directors. He was a member of the Central Iowa Tractor Club, Red Rock Thrashers and the American Legion.

Gary enjoyed antique farm machinery, going on tractor rides with his friends and John Wayne movies. He also enjoyed collecting baseball cards, coins, and Lionel Trains. He delighted in spending time with his family.

His family includes his wife of over 44 years, Linda Lindgren of Oskaloosa; two sons: Chris (Heather) Lindgren of Humboldt, Iowa and Aaron Lindgren of Oskaloosa; three granddaughters: Abigail, Brenna and Callie Lindgren; a brother, Mark (Nancy) Lindgren of Stanton, Iowa; his mother-in-law, Ardyth Anderson of Oskaloosa; aunt and uncle, Don and Diane Johnson of Fairfield, California; and two nephews, Jake and Sam.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his father in law, Lorence Anderson.

Funeral services will be held Friday, August 1, 2014, at 9:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating.
Burial with military honors will be at 12:30 Friday afternoon in the Iowa Veterans Cemetery at Van Meter, Iowa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Thursday morning after 11 in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 6-8 Thursday evening to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to the Nelson Pioneer Farm.
