Gary Brouwer, 92 of Montezuma passed away peacefully Saturday evening, June 15, 2019 at the Montezuma Specialty Care.
Gary Hiram Brouwer was born January 12, 1927 at the Groenenboom Hospital in Montezuma, the son of Andrew and Antoinette Van Helten Brouwer.

As a youth he attended Pleasant #7 and Montezuma schools. Gary served in the United States Army.

In 1950, Gary was united in marriage to Nadine Johnson in Grinnell. To this union six children were born: Andrew, Kevin, Douglas, Kelly, Kimberly and Tina.

Gary, a lifelong resident of Poweshiek County, was employed as a heavy equipment operator and farmer. In later years, he enjoyed spending winters in California and Texas. Gary was a skilled mechanic and certified welder. He enjoyed working on old trucks and equipment. Gary always had a dog as a companion and near his side.

Gary is survived by five children: Andrew of Palm Springs, California, Douglas of Palm Springs, California, Kelly (& Norma) of Waco, Texas, Kimberly (& Rex) Bushong of Brooklyn and Tina Hartman of Des Moines; nine grandchildren: Jason Blackfox, Kevin Brouwer Jr, Elissa Brouwer, Briana Brouwer, Lucas (& Nicole) Bushong, Blake Bushong, Emmy Bushong, Marisa Bushong, and Cambri Hartman; and six great grandchildren.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Hazel (& Charles) Hamilton, a son, Kevin; and a grandson, Tony Farrington.

As was Gary’s wish, his body has been cremated and a private burial will be held in the Jackson Township Cemetery in Montezuma.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made out to Poweshiek Animal League Services “PALS” and sent to the funeral home.
