Gable To Headline IHCC Event

OTTUMWA — One of the legendary figures in Iowa’s athletic history will be coming to Ottumwa this fall to be the featured speaker for the 38th annual Indian Hills Community College Celebrity Night. Dan Gable has accepted an invitation to appear at the annual event, a main fundraiser for the Indian Hills Foundation. The exciting evening is slated for Thursday, Oct. 17, in the Tom Arnold Net Center on the IHCC Ottumwa campus.

Gable, a native of Waterloo, is the all-time winningest wrestling coach at the University of Iowa, having led the Hawkeyes to 15 NCAA national titles while compiling a career record of 355-21-5. He coached 152 All-Americans, 45 national champions, 106 Big Ten champs and 12 Olympians, including four gold, one silver and three bronze medalists. The Hawkeyes won 25 consecutive Big Ten championships, 21 under Gable as head coach and four while he was an assistant coach and administrator.

Before starting his coaching career, Gable was one of the top prep and college wrestlers ever, putting together a career record of 181-1. He was 117-1 at Iowa State University, his only defeat coming in the NCAA finals his senior year in his final collegiate match. After college he added titles at the 1971 Pan American Games and World Championships and the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany, where he didn’t surrender a single point while winning gold for the USA.

Celebrity Night will begin with a reception at 5:30 p.m., followed by a welcome and dinner. After dinner, Gable will give his message. The evening will conclude with an auction of various art items and vacation experiences.

Attendees are welcome to buy tickets individually, or as a corporate table (which will include tickets for 8 guests). All proceeds go toward scholarships for Indian Hills students.
Tickets can be purchased at www.indianhills.edu/celebritynight.
