Frank Mick, 72 of New Sharon passed away suddenly on Monday, September 30, 2019 at his home. Francis Merle Mick, the son of Raymond and Winifred (Lowe) Mick, was born on October 31, 1946 in Newton, Iowa.

Frank was a 1965 graduate of Lynnville-Sully High School. Following high school, Frank worked at Maytag in Newton.

Frank was drafted by the United States Army in February of 1966. He served his country for two years during the Vietnam Conflict. Following his honorable discharge, he went back to work at Maytag.

On May 11, 1968, Frank was united in marriage to Patricia Bond in Newton, Iowa. To this union two children were born, Kelly and Kari.

Frank worked several years at Maytag before joining the Oskaloosa Police Department where he was a dispatcher. During that time he volunteered for the New Sharon Police Department for a number of years. He eventually joined the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Department as a jailer and dispatcher. Frank also worked for Oskaloosa Engineering, retiring due to health reasons.

Frank has dedicated a lifetime to his community, serving on the New Sharon Fire Department for over 42 years. He was also a member of the Coffin-Miller American Legion Post #446 for over 25 years, serving as legion chaplain. Frank was a member of the New Sharon First Christian Church, he served several years on the Prairie Home Board, a Mahaska County Hospice Volunteer and Jasper County Sheriff’s Reserve. He volunteered at school reading to students and served on the North Mahaska Early Childhood Development Board.

Frank’s pride and joy was his family. He was a huge supporter and absolutely loved attending all of his grandchildren’s activities. He rarely missed a game, an event or a school function they participated in. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, trapping and also his time farming with Verlan Uitermarkt.

Frank’s legacy will be honored by his wife of 51 years, Pat Mick of New Sharon; his children: Kelly (& Tonya Wanders) Mick of New Sharon and Kari (& Dean) Chandler of New Sharon; eight grandchildren: Karlee Chandler, Gracee Chandler, Keira Blanke, Gage Mick, Kalynn Wanders, Tyler Pollpeter, Allison Pollpeter and Brock Pollpeter; two great granddaughters, Riley and Hadley Pollpeter; sisters-in-law: Diana Mick and Donna (& Jack) Smith; a brother-in-law, Jerry (& Pam) Bond; two step sisters: Ruth Ann (& Terry) Shuey of Grinnell and Barbara Madison of South Dakota; mother-in-law, Eunice Bond; and many other relatives and friends.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents; his step dad, Neil Lockwood; his brothers, Larry Mick and Kevin Mick; a brother-in-law, James Bond; and a nephew, Todd Ferguson.

As was Frank’s wish, his body has been cremated.
Memorial services will begin at 10:30 Saturday, October 5, 2019 at the New Sharon First Christian Church.
Burial will be held in the Friends Cemetery in New Sharon.
Visitation will begin after 12:00 pm Friday, October 4, 2019 at the New Sharon First Christian Church with the family present from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the New Sharon Fire and Rescue or the New Sharon First Christian Church.
