Five Enter Season Ranked in NAIA
Oskaloosa–The William Penn women’s wrestling team has a handful of representatives on the national list as the NAIA released its preseason polls Thursday.
WPU enters the campaign 22nd in the country with 34 points. Five grapplers are in their respective top-20 rankings, led by 155-pounder Salima Omari (Jr., Iowa City, Iowa) at #9.
Mami Selemani (Jr., Iowa City, Iowa, Business Management) is next in 12th place at 123 pounds, while Andrea Smith (So., Rochester, N.Y.) and Toyia Griffin (So., Nashua, Iowa, Nursing) are 17th and 18th, respectively, at 170 pounds.
116-pounder Catherine Steinkamp (So., Quincy, Ill., Biology) rounds out the nationally-ranked individuals at #20.
Amongst Heart of America Athletic Conference programs, WPU is sixth with 97 points. Grand View tops the ranking with 207 points.
Omari again leads the navy and gold, sitting second at 155, while Smith is third at 170. Steinkamp, at 116, Selemani, at 123, and Griffin, at 170, are all fourth, while 116-pounder Brittany Cotter (So., Katy, Texas, Nursing) and 130-pounder Gwendolyn Grimes (So., Katy, Texas) are both fifth.
