Fitzgerald shares conference honors for Central track team

PELLA — A victorious evffort in the shot put helped Central College men’s track and field thrower Nathan Fitzgerald (junior, Elkader, Central HS) earn a share of the Iowa Conference field event performer of the week honors the league office announced Monday.

Competing at the Fighting Scot Invitational hosted by Monmouth College, Fitzgerald uncorked a new personal-best toss of 51 feet, 3.5 inches to best the 14-man field. He added a second-place toss in the discus throw (148-6) and a sixth-place mark in the hammer throw (147-3).

Central has now had three athletes win an Iowa Conference field events performer of the week honor during the outdoor season. Ryan Kruse (senior, St. Clair, Minn.) was the first on April 1 and Will Daniels (sophomore, Geneseo, Ill.) followed on April 22.

Fitzgerald shared the honors with Maurice Cushion-Lewis from the University of Dubuque.

The Iowa Conference Outdoor Championships are set to be hosted in Pella at Central’s Ron Schipper Stadium starting with multi-event action Thursday afternoon. The second-place finisher in the indoor shot put in February, Fitzgerald will go for first Friday at 5:30 p.m.
