Final Non-Conference Battle Ends in Tie for WPU
Oskaloosa–The William Penn men’s soccer team took on its final non-conference foe of the season Saturday and was forced to settle for a 1-1 tie against Briar Cliff.
As it has in most games this fall, William Penn (7-5-1) had a barrage of shots, leading that category 13-5 over the Chargers (4-6-5).
The first half consisted of a defensive battle that saw the teams combine for just six shots.
The game remained scoreless for a good portion of the second stanza, but WPU finally got on the board at the 67:12 mark when Thomas Jensen (Fr., Aalgaard, Norway, Sports Management) rebounded a blocked shot and send it past the BCU goalkeeper.
The Statesmen continued to be a wall defensively until a corner kick turned into a disheartening equalizer for Briar Cliff at the 85:25 mark. Neither side could break the tie in the final moments as the navy and gold settled for their first draw of the campaign.
Jensen, who came off the bench, and Chanin Olandin (So., Oslo Norway, Sports Management) managed to fire off three shots each, while Luigi Mongan (So., Manchester, England, Business Management) tallied two attempts. Matias Breit (So., Osorno, Chile, Psychology) finished with one save between the pipes.
“Unfortunately, as a non-conference game, it had the feel of a game that was not very important to our players,” Head Coach Simon Brown said. We need to focus on getting back to winning as we prepare for a tough road game at Culver-Stockton.”
Up Next: William Penn will travel to Canton, Mo. next Wednesday to face Culver-Stockton for a Heart of America Athletic Conference matchup at 7:30 p.m.
