This spring you can hear, “Let’s go on a picnic at the Lacey Recreation Complex!” MCRF recently completed a full picnic area to the east of the football stadium for community use. The picnic space includes a large shelter with a concrete floor and patio that will house six picnic tables for large groups, especially for those youth playing ball at the Lacey Complex and needing a team break between games. There are four additional concrete slabs to house single picnic tables, and MCRF welcomes the community to share the space.

Mahaska County Farm Bureau partnered with MCRF earlier this year to see the project installed. Don Vos, Tom Jackson, and Stacie Boender met with MCRF Board members Carl Drost and Joe Crookham at the sight on Tuesday, November 14th as Farm Bureau presented a $20,000 check toward the project.

MCRF initially received a grant from Mahaska County Community Foundation for $10,400 to start the picnic project. Following the grant, Carl visited with Mahaska County Farm Bureau who liked the project and wanted to get involved. The project grew, and the Mahaska County Farm Bureau added $20,000 to the shelter for the picnic area. The shelter than was able to include 50-year steel roof shingles and a concrete patio in front. The design is consistent with the 5-plex concessions.

At the sight, Carl & Joe expressed gratitude for the Farm Bureau’s partnership. Tom Jackson said that they look forward to youth using the area in the spring. Tables will be added and the area ready for use before the spring ball season opens, thanks to MCCF and Farm Bureau!
