Evelyn Joyce Asher, 77, of Beacon, passed away Saturday, January 2, 2021 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. She was born October 24, 1943 in Newton, Iowa the daughter of John and Katie (Slycord) Pietersma.
Evelyn grew up and attended Pella Schools until the 8th grade.
On November 24, 1961 she was united to Dwight “Pete” Asher at the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa. Together they enjoyed 58 years of marriage until Pete’s passing on August 2, 2019.
Before her marriage to Pete, she was working at Rolscreen (now Pella Corp). Pete was later drafted into the Army and the couple moved to Killeen, Texas, where she worked as a lifeguard. After Pete’s service to his country, they moved back to Oskaloosa. In 1970, Evelyn and Pete welcomed their daughter, Rhonda, into their lives. Evelyn was a housekeeper for over 25 years at Pleasant Park (now Crystal Heights Care Center) until retiring in 1990.
Evelyn was an avid card player and enjoyed playing with her family and friends. She also enjoyed going with her family to Pizza Ranch the first Wednesday of every month, watching Sci-Fi shows and the Incredible Dr. Pol, spending days down at Rathbun Lake fishing and driving the Pontoon, making large meals for her family gatherings and baking with her great grandchildren.
Evelyn’s family includes her daughter, Rhonda Asher of Beacon; her grandchildren: Amber Myers of Norwalk and Austin Asher of Oskaloosa; her great grandchildren: Aliannah Myers, Jackson Myers, Rayce Asher and Serenity Asher; two sisters: Mary (& Roy) DeLong of Leighton, Iowa and Betty Pietersma of Little Rock, Arkansas; five brothers: Leonard Petersma of Gravity, Iowa, Richard (& Sharon) Petersma of Pella, Iowa, Norman (& Deb) Petersma of Marble Falls, Texas, Robert (& Becky) Petersma of Round Rock, Texas and John Pietersma of Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Harold Petersma and Charlie Petersma; two sisters, Margaret Petersma and Dorothy Van Doorn; and two sister-in-laws, JoAnn Asher and Linda Petersma.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 7 at 10:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Marvin Knoot officiating.
Burial will be in the Bloomfield Cemetery in Mahaska County, Iowa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
According to the rules put in place by the Iowa Department of Public Health, proper social distancing and reasonable personal protective equipment is advised for attending a religious public event.
The funeral service will be live streamed at the funeral home’s YouTube Channel for those wishing to support the family from a distance.
The family requests all who are attending to please wear a mask.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 in the Bates Funeral Chapel beginning after 2:00 p.m. and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday evening to greet friends and relatives.
