Evangeline “Vangie” Slycord, 89, of Oskaloosa passed away Friday, January 30, 2015, at the Oskaloosa Care Center. Vangie Slycord, daughter of John and Beulah (Evans) Whitlock, was born on April 6, 1925, in Oskaloosa.
After attending school in Oskaloosa, Vangie married Albert Brooks and lived in the Greenview addition, where she spent most of her life. She worked briefly at the naval ship yard in Portland, Oregon during the early 1940’s before moving back to Oskaloosa. In 1959 she married Jack Hudson and was a cook at various nursing homes and restaurants in Oskaloosa.
She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She will be deeply missed and will always be remembered, especially for her Christmas Boxes.
Vangie’s family includes her two sons: Paul (& Carolyn) Brooks of Muscatine, IA and Donald (& Anne) Brooks of Fremont, IA; a daughter, Barbara Hudson (& Joe) Fletcher of Oskaloosa, IA; Eight grandchildren: Chris and Dan Brooks, both of Seattle, WA, Rebecca Anderson and Cherrie Linderman of Muscatine, IA, Kim Long, David Allgood and Amanda Ramirez of Oskaloosa, IA and Tabitha McClenon of Ohio; 17 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; as well as special nieces and nephews: Judy Greenhalgh, Shirley Nance, Vernie Nance and Tim Nance.
In addition to her parents, Vangie was preceded in death by two sons, Norman and Richard Brooks; a sister, Francis Nance; a grandson, Kelly Brooks; and one great-grandson, Malahkaih Smith.
As was her wish, her body had been cremated.
A memorial visitation will be held at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel later this spring.
