Edythe Fleener, 97, of Oskaloosa, passed away Sunday, September 26, 2021, at the MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. She was born April 6, 1924, in Leighton, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Sarah (Van Zee) Hackert.

Edythe graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1942.

Following high school, she worked in the family businesses of Hackert’s Locker Plant and Allied Gas & Chemical Company until retiring in 2004.

Edythe married John “Jack” Fleener, Jr. of Oskaloosa and they had three sons: Jerry Dean “J.D.”, Michael, and Charles.

She was a member of the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Red Hat Ladies. In her early days she enjoyed square dancing, golfing, bowling and playing bridge. She always enjoyed adventures and even went skydiving at the age of 79. Edythe enjoyed her lifetime of working in the family businesses and cherished the relationships she fostered over the years.

She is survived by two sons and their wives, Michael and Barbara Fleener of Timnath, Colorado and Charles and Donna Fleener of Oskaloosa; her daughter-in-law, Treva Fleener of Oskaloosa; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Edythe was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jack; her eldest son, J.D. Fleener; and her sister and brother-in-law, Thyrza and Tom Steward.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, October 16, 2021, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa, Iowa with Reverend Molly Goodrich officiating.
Burial will follow the services in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa, Iowa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will be held Friday, October 15, 2021, beginning after 12:00 noon with Edythe’s family present from 5-7 p.m. to greet friends and relatives.
In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to MHP Hospice Serenity House.
