Dorothy Edith Wilson Frey was born on October 15, 1916 in Oregon, Missouri. Her parents were John Hubert and Winnie Brodbeck Wilson. After attending the twelve grades in Oregon schools she enrolled at Northwest Missouri State Teachers College at Maryville, Missouri from where she received her B.S. degree in Education in 1938. In later years, she received her master’s degree equivalency at the University of Iowa. Her first teaching position was at Sidney, Iowa. She taught there for two years.

In 1941 she and Burtis L. Frey were married. In the years following she worked as a secretary at the Naval Air Station in Seattle, Washington, where her husband was on duty. During this time their first son, Douglas Allan, was born. After her husband’s discharge from the Navy, their move was to their home in University Park, Iowa. Following this their second son, Warren Bruce, was born. After her sons were of school age she did substitute teaching in both the elementary and high school grades. This continued until her sons were at the junior and senior high levels. Then she taught English and Home Economics in Oskaloosa Junior High School. After four years at the junior high, she made a change to Oskaloosa Senior High School where she was the art teacher until she retired. She was a longtime member of Chapter X, P.E.O., and Delta Kappa Gamma. Other memberships were in Mahaska County Home Economics Club, King’s Daughters, and Kiwanis Ladies.

Edith’s memory is honored by her two sons and a daughter-in-law: Douglas Allan Frey of Des Moines, Iowa; and Warren Bruce and Karla Frey of Clinton, Connecticut; a grandson, Nicolas M. Frey of Fort Collins, Colorado. She is survived by her sister, Betty Ann McComb of Oregon, MO. In addition to her parents, Edith was preceded in death her husband Burt of 67 years; a brother, George H. Wilson; her adopted sister, Erma Dean; and her brother-in-law, Charles McComb.

Memorials may be made to the local Delta Kappa Gamma Society to aid outstanding women educators.
