SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO — The Central College men’s basketball squad could not turn a halftime lead into a victory Monday in Puerto Rico, dropping an 82-77 contest to SUNY-Oneonta.

The Dutch (8-2) led 37-31 at the break, but were outscored 51-40 in the final 20 minutes.

“We had our opportunities in this game,” coach Craig Douma said. “In the second half, we had good looks at the basket, we just didn’t convert.”

Central outrebounded the Red Dragons (6-2) 37-29, but committed 26 costly turnovers.

“We had a few great transition opportunities late in the game and we turned the ball over,” Douma said. “We can’t turn the ball over that many times and expect to win.”

Both teams shot the ball well from the floor, the Dutch at a 49 percent clip (27-of-55) and SUNY-Oneonta at 50 percent (28-of-56). Central knocked down 8-of-21 3-point attempts and 15-of-22 shots from the charity stripe.

Junior forward Colby Taylor (Creston, Iowa) led the Dutch with 24 points, tacking on eight rebounds. Sophomore guard Trashawn Boyd (Normal, Ill./University HS) knocked down 7-of-9 shots for a career-high 16 points.

“Trashawn really gave us a spark in the second half,” Douma said. “He created some opportunities for us down the stretch.”

Sophomore guard Kyle Smith (Ionia, Iowa/New Hampton HS) went for 13 points, while junior guard Pete Walker (Red Oak, Iowa) added eight points and four rebounds. Junior forward Ryan Kunkel (Solon, Iowa) had eight rebounds.

The Dutch will play their final game in Puerto Rico Tuesday against Vassar (N.Y.) at 2 p.m. Central time. It will be the first meeting between Central and the Brewers. Vassar took a 3-4 record into a Monday contest in San Juan with Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.).
