Dennis Hasselman, 66, of rural Ottumwa, died Thursday, September 27, 2018, at the Sigourney Health Center in Sigourney. He was born August 23, 1952, in Oskaloosa, the son of Homer and Doretha DeBruin Hasselman.

Dennis attended Prine Country School through 6th grade. He then transitioned to Oskaloosa Community School and graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1970. He continued his education at William Penn College, graduating in 1974 with his teaching degree.

Following graduation from college Dennis taught one year at North Linn Community Schools. He later moved back to southern Iowa and taught and drove school bus for Fremont Community School District until 1988. In 1988, he transitioned to farming full-time and bought a farm west of Hedrick, Iowa.

On March 25, 1989, Dennis was united in marriage to Ann (Kent) Moore. The two of them shared a passion for farming and love of their farm for the past 30 years.

At a young age Dennis made his profession of faith in the Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa. Through the years he transferred his membership to Fremont United Methodist Church and then Christian Union Church.

Dennis was a member of the Iowa Antique Tractor Association and had served several years as president. He loved antique tractors and steam engines, and had great knowledge on how to keep them maintained and running. In his heart he was a lifelong teacher and farmer, he was always willing to share his knowledge with the youth in the area.

His family includes his wife of over 30 years, Ann Hasselman of Ottumwa; his mother, Doretha Hasselman of Oskaloosa; his sister and her husband, Diane & David Burkhardt of Charles City, Iowa; two brothers and their wives: Dean & Pat Hasselman of Renton, Washington and Douglas & Leann Hasselman of Oskaloosa; three step children: Kelly Goudy of Ottumwa, Kyle (& Carrie) Moore of Hedrick, and Kurt (& Jacque) Moore of Ottumwa; 7 step-grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Homer Hasselman.

Private family graveside services and burial will be held. The Fremont Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Open visitation will be held from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday, September 30, 2018, in the Fremont Funeral Chapel in Fremont.
Memorials may be made to Heartland Humane Society or Dog Star Sanctuary.
