DC-G Girls Have Big 2nd Quarter To Down Indians

Oskaloosa Indians

By Jamie Brockman

I’m sure you’ve heard the old cliché “tale of two quarters”… well, that was the case as the Oskaloosa girls traveled to DC-G Saturday afternoon and fell 56-25.

Coming in DC-G was a strong favorite with a solid hold on second place in the LHC.

Oskaloosa played one of their best quarters of the season and hung right with the Mustangs only trailing 11-8 after the first quarter. The second quarter changed everything, as DC-G outscored Osky 20-0 to gain a 31-8 halftime advantage.

The second half was fairly even between the two, but the Indians couldn’t overcome the big deficit following that second quarter.

Head Coach Jacie White said, “The second quarter was the difference in this game. Defensively we kind of gave in a little bit. We’ve had that all season and even last year with some lulls, even though we’ve had some better quarters but for a while, we weren’t doing the little things defensively and the second quarter just got away from us. White went on to say “In the second half we had a lot of girls step up. We moved the ball well offensively, had some great attacks, but as we’ve been saying all year they have to take shots, and we had girls passing up perfectly good shots. We’ve got to find that balance of trying to be unselfish, but being a little selfish and taking shots”. White also credited the hard play all game of Ashley Drost, as well as the defense of Aubrey Boender and Kaylee Johnson. Drost led Oskaloosa with a season-high 14 points, including 10-12 at the free throw line. Macie Krier scored five points, Johnson added four and Emma Kelderman contributed two points.

Oskaloosa fell to 2-15 on the season and 1-9 in LHC play and returns to action with a busy week starting at home Monday night when they host the LHC leaders Grinnell, who are ranked 4th in Class 4A.

Tip-off is scheduled for a 7:45 pm tip-off. On Tuesday evening, they host Indianola, then travel to Pella Christian on Thursday. They finish the week hosting Norwalk on Saturday.
