Daniel “Bro” Lee Thomas, 58, of Oskaloosa died Friday, August 11, 2017, at the MHP Hospital in Oskaloosa, after a 10-month bout with esophageal cancer. He was born February 9, 1959, at Albia, Iowa, the son of Reese and Lois Cooper Thomas, Jr.
Dan graduated from Albia High School with the class of 1977.
Following graduation he went to work at Rolscreen (now Pella Corporation).
Dan was united in marriage to Cindy Nunnikhoven, to this union a daughter Alicia was born. Cindy and Dan later divorced.
On February 21, 1992, he was united in marriage to Marla Turner in Oskaloosa, to this union a son Cody was born. Dan and Marla celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in February of 2017.
Dan was looking forward to celebrating his 40 years at Pella Corp. by retiring on September 5, 2017. Ill health forced Dan to quit working before he reached that date.
Dan was a member of the V.F.W. in Oskaloosa. He enjoyed camping, playing cards (especially 31), and riding his Harley. He looked forward to traveling to Florida every winter to visit friends. Marla and His plan was to spend all winter in Florida after retirement. He cherished spending time with his granddaughters and giving them rides on the golf cart. He was anxiously waiting for the birth of his grandson so he could buy him his first .410. Hunting was another passion of his with his son and longtime hunting buddies.
Dan’s memory will be cherished by his wife of over 25 years, Marla Thomas of Oskaloosa; a daughter, Alicia (& Brad) Cartwright of Monroe; a son, Cody Thomas of Oskaloosa; two granddaughters, Bradyn and Avery Cartwright; a grandson due soon; his mother, Lois Thomas of Oskaloosa; two brothers: Bill (& Deb) Thomas of Albia and Terry (& Crick) Thomas of Eddyville; a sister, Jean (& Gary) Herr of Fremont; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Dan was preceded in death by his father.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 16, 2017, at 1 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating.
Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Tuesday after 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 5-8 Tuesday evening to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to Hogs for Dogs or American Cancer Society.
