Daniel G. Buchanan, age 61, of Oskaloosa, passed away on Tuesday, February 2, 2021 at his home in Oskaloosa. He was the son of Russell Howard and Katharyne Lenore (Flockhart) Buchanan and was born on April 12, 1959, in Dayton, Ohio.
Dan attended Oskaloosa High School.
On March 4, 1989 he was united in marriage to Shelvie Hillman at the Central United Methodist Church in Oskaloosa.
Dan worked for Vermeer for 15 years. He then went to work in the machine shop at Clow Valve in Oskaloosa.
Dan enjoyed fishing, woodworking, cheering for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and spending time with family.
His family includes his wife, Shelvie Buchanan of Oskaloosa; a daughter, Sheffiney Thomas of What Cheer; a son, Otis (& Heather) Hoskins of Albia; 6 grandchildren: Tyler (& Samantha) Hoskins, NaTorie Thomas, Clayton (& Mackenzie) Thomas, Sydney Hoskins, Morgan Hoskins and Brody Hoskins; 3 great grandchildren: Adalyn Hoskins, Ezra Hoskins, Flynn Hoskins and one great grandson due in June; his father, Russ (& Joan) Buchanan of Melbourne, Florida; his siblings: Scott (& Melinda) Buchanan of Punta Gorda, FL, Jay (& Lori) Buchanan of Omaha, NE, Philip (& Sharon) Buchanan of Chicago Area, Greg Buchanan of Charlotte, N.C., Audrey (& Jim) Dunn of Altoona, IA, Macee (& Justin) Hurt of Des Moines, IA, Kelly Garrington of Pella, IA, and Mary (& Steve) Halfhill of Dubuque, IA.
Dan was preceded in death by his mother, Katharyne Buchanan; his biological father, Bob Lathem; and a son-in-law, Rusty Thomas.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 6, 2021, at 2 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Paul Williams officiating. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
As was Dan’s wish his body will be cremated following the funeral service.
According to the rules put in place by the Iowa Department of Public Health, proper social distancing and reasonable personal protective equipment is advised for attending a religious public event.
The funeral will be posted to the Bates Funeral Chapel’s YouTube page for those unable to attend.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 6, 2021 beginning at 12:00 p.m. at the Bates Funeral Chapel. The family will be present at Bates Funeral Chapel from 12:00 p.m. to service time to greet relatives and friends.
