Daniel Chavez, 86, of Oskaloosa, died Monday, September 28, 2020, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City. He was born October 19, 1933, in San Lorenzo Jalisco, Mexico, the son of Ramon and Francisco Rodriguez Chavez.

Daniel grew up in rural Mexico and worked as a farmer.

In 1955, he was united in marriage to Isidra Palos at Francisco Y Madero El Planteado Zac, Mexico.

In the 1980’s he moved to the United States and worked on farms in California. The family later moved to Chicago and Daniel worked in a vegetable processing factory. In the early 2000’s, he retired and moved to Oskaloosa to be closer to family.

Daniel was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oskaloosa. He enjoyed working in his garden growing peppers and tomatoes.

His family includes his wife of over 65 years, Isidra Palos of Oskaloosa; his children, Eliseo (& Rosary) Chavez of Chicago, Tony (& Rosa) Chavez of Oskaloosa, Elidia (& Lalo) Alverez of Nebraska, Ramon (& Marcella) Chavez of Los Angeles, California, Salvador (& Alecia) Chavez of Oskaloosa, Evangelina (& Jose) Rodriguez of Oskaloosa, Maria (& Jose) Chavez of Oskaloosa, Maria de los Anjeles Chavez of Aguascalientes, Mexico, and Elaina Chavez of Aguascalientes, Mexico; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Daniel was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Margarita Chavez.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be on Saturday, October 3, 2020, at 10:00 a.m. in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oskaloosa with Reverend Troy Richmond officiating.
Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
According to the rules put in place by the Iowa Department of Public Health, proper social distancing and reasonable personal protective equipment is advised for attending a religious public event.
Visitation with the family present will be held Saturday morning from 8 a.m. until a procession is formed at 9:45 to go to St. Mary’s Catholic Church for Mass.
