Curta Named Performer of the Week

GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College’s Vinny Curta led the Pioneers to wins against Cornell College and Lawrence University last week and has been named the Midwest Conference (MWC) Performer of the Week.

Curta averaged 29.0 points a contest and came up with 12 assists and six steals last week as Grinnell improved to 8-4 in league play. Curta erupted for a career-high 40 points in the Pioneers’ thrilling 117-116 come-from-behind victory at Cornell. Three days later, the nation’s No. 4 scorer registered his first double-double of the season as Grinnell beat Lawrence, a team the Pioneers went to overtime with in December, by a score of 129-91. Curta had 18 points and 11 assists to go along with five steals.

Notable Performances
Mitchell Patterson averaged 20.5 points and 5.5 rebounds as Illinois College split a pair of road games at Lake Forest College and Ripon College this week. The senior shot better than 56 percent from the floor and added six assists, four blocks and three steals in the two contests.

Ty Sabin led Ripon College to a pair of wins last week to improve the Red Hawks’ conference record to 10-2. In the two games, Sabin averaged 30 points, five rebounds, 3.5 assists and one steal per game. He also shot 58 percent (23-of-40) from the field and 36 percent (5-of-14) from three-point range, while making all nine of his free throw attempts. Sabin also became the first player in Ripon history to score more than 500 points in three different seasons, while moving into third place in the MWC record book for career points.

Jon Anderson turned in the second-highest scoring game ever by a Cornell College player Wednesday, erupting for 44 points on 18-of-21 field goal shooting in a 117-116 loss to Grinnell. The junior had six dunks and grabbed seven rebounds in the contest. In two games last week, Anderson averaged 27.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and shot 81.5 percent (22-of-27) from the floor.

Ben Bobinski led St. Norbert College to two wins last week. Bobinski finished with 23 points, four rebounds and two assists in 29 minutes in Wednesday’s 77-57 win over Lawrence. Bobinski added 14 points, eight rebounds and one assist in 35 minutes in Saturday’s 67-57 win over Cornell, a win that was St. Norbert’s 47th consecutive home win over MWC opponents.
