Cruz Scores Twice in 3-1 Win Over Iowa Wesleyan

Oskaloosa–The Statesmen soccer team got back to .500 overall as it dropped Iowa Wesleyan 3-1 in non-conference action Wednesday.

William Penn (7-7), who has won three of its last four, is even for the first time since September 18. The home team outshot the Tigers (4-8) by a tally of 22-13.

Mark Dryden (Jr., Arbroath, Scotland, Biology) put his team on top with a penalty kick goal at the 22:48 mark. It was third goal of 2012.

Iowa Wesleyan answered back in the 29th minute, but Victor Cruz (Jr., Elsa, Texas, Business Management) gave the hosts the lead back for good in the 38th minute. Matheus Riberio (Fr., Vitoria, Brazil, Biology) earned the assist, his team-leading third of the fall.

Cruz then added an insurance goal at the 71:35 mark with Leonardo Teixeira (Jr., Sao Paolo, Brazil, Undecided) receiving the assist (his first this year). Cruz is now heading William Penn with five goals.

Mason Bandy (So., Calgary, Alberta, Biology) saved seven shots for the victory.

Next: William Penn travels to Dubuque Saturday to face Clarke in Midwest Collegiate Conference action at 4 p.m.
