On October 2nd, Smokey Row and Scratch Cupcakery organized a collaborative fundraiser on behalf of Crisis Intervention Services (CIS). The local event was held at Smokey Row, where Scratch Cupcakery used their Curbside program to bring their cupcakes to Oskaloosa’s residents. All proceeds earned from cupcake sales, an impressive $1,200, were donated to CIS to benefit victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and violent crimes.

The event kicked off the beginning of Domestic Violence Awareness month, which is honored in October. Such demonstrations of support and unity are key to ending violence, particularly in a time when funding and resources are scarce. “The cuts to the state budget for victim service agencies leave CIS and our sister agencies trying to sustain services with fewer dollars,” said Director Nancy Robertson. “Financial contributions allow us to put these dollars where they are needed most.” The fundraiser, which was planned without CIS’s knowledge, was an inspiring demonstration of community initiative and of support both for CIS and for local residents who are survivors of violence.

Community donations are essential to continuing assistance and support for victims in our communities. The donated money will be used to fund housing assistance for individuals displaced due to violence, and to meet basic needs of families staying at the emergency shelter, such as food, clothing, and hygiene products.

Crisis Intervention Services’ (CIS) mission is to empower individuals, families and the community to end all forms of violence. CIS offers comprehensive sexual assault, emergency shelter, and housing services to victims of sexual abuse, domestic violence, and violent crime, as well as prevention programming and educational outreach in a 12 county service area. In fiscal year 2017, CIS provided services to 1,418 clients.

CIS offers services in Appanoose, Davis, Jasper, Jefferson, Keokuk, Lucas, Mahaska, Marion, Monroe, Poweshiek, Wapello and Wayne counties in Iowa. Crisis Intervention Services hotlines are available 24 hours a day. Sexual Assault Crisis Line 1-800-270-1620. Emergency Housing Hotline 1-844-673-5499.
