A Cover Crop Field Day event will be held on the Russell Plate farm south of Lake Keomah State Park in Mahaska County from 1:30-3pm, Tuesday March 25, 2014. Russell Plate will share his experience growing a cover crop the past 6 years. Presentations will also be made by ISU Extension Agronomist, Mark Carlton on the Agronomics of Cover Crops. NRCS Soil Scientist, Jason Steele, will discuss Soil Health and will hold demonstrations teaching about soil structure and compaction. NRCS Soil Conservationist, Nichole Baxter, will discuss Assistance Programs for cover crops, and NRCS District Conservationist, Kevin Funni, will further discuss Soil Health and Getting Started with Cover Crops. Refreshments will be available courtesy of the Mahaska Soil and Water Conservation District.

DIRECTIONS to the field day: About 3 miles east of Oskaloosa on Hwy. 92, turn right onto Queens Avenue. Travel 2 miles south to the T-intersection of Queens/265th Street. The field day will be located on the northeast corner of the intersection. If you have questions or need special accommodations, please contact the NRCS office in Oskaloosa at 641-673-3476 ext. 3.
