Council Hears About Iowa DNR Report On Wastewater

October 19th, 2022

Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Oskaloosa City Council met in regular session on Monday, October 17th, 2022, at 6 pm inside the city hall council chambers.

In a letter from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, or Iowa DNR, the city of Oskaloosa has received two letters of non-compliance for violation of final effluent limits, one for each treatment facility.

The Council officially received the inspection reports, and Shawn Christ with the city of Oskaloosa explained that, at this point, the city is having infrequent effluent violations at both plants.

One of the consistent violations has been copper at the northeast plant, and the current filter system wasn’t designed to deal with copper levels set by the Iowa DNR. “So getting our copper to the proper place is definitely a priority,” added Christ. “It’s something we’ll continue to work towards, but it is a difficult compliance for us to meet.”

Helping to meet the standards set by the Iowa DNR is something the new treatment facility will address when it’s completed. The current estimated cost for that new facility is expected to top 90 million dollars.
