Corner kick nets late equalizer for Dutch women’s soccer team

PELLA — After losing its first-half lead, the Central College women’s soccer team scored with less than three minutes remaining on the clock to come away with a 2-2 tie against North Park University (Ill.) Saturday.

Central (2-0-2) got the scoring started exactly 28 minutes into the match when Paige Cahill (senior, Castle Rock, Colo., Castle View HS) found Grace Coates (Junior, Marion) for a goal. It’s the third time this season the tandem have combined for a score.

“You know those two are going to score points in every game,” “They are two of the best attackers I’ve seen all year and I’m not just talking about the best in the region, I’m talking about nationally.”

The Vikings (1-1-2) flipped the script with scoring tallies in the 50th minute off a corner kick and in the 69th minute after confusion between two Central defenders.

“The first goal was unfortunate off a corner kick and we’ve got to learn from that,” Kobylinski said. “On the second goal, I made the decision to have goalkeeper Zoey Sizemore (freshman, Omaha, Neb., Mercy HS) come out for it and I think defender Katy Brown (sophomore, St. Charles, Mo., Orchard Farm HS) could have closed that angle so I’ll take some of that blame.”

Abby Frey (senior, Mesa, Ariz., Desert Ridge HS) lined up for a corner kick in the 88th minute for the team’s ninth corner of the day. This time, Frey found Bridget Lynch (fifth year, Northglenn, Colo., Jefferson Academy) on the far post for the equalizer.

“We pushed Bridget up from center back to defensive midfielder for the last five minutes,” Kobylinski said. “I’m so proud of Bridget and the way she’s led all year. Abby put it on a platter for her.”

Central travels to Augustana College (Ill.) for a Wednesday night match at 6 p.m.
