Coe shuts down Central volleyball team
GRINNELL— Coe College quieted the Central College offense for the second time in four days with a 25-13, 25-12, 25-16 volleyball decision Friday night at the Grinnell College Invitational.
The Kohawks also tripped Central in an Iowa Conference matchup Tuesday night.
Coe (9-6) outhit the Dutch .240 to -.053, and posted nine team blocks.
Middle hitter Ashley Pedersen (senior, Humboldt) and outside hitter Jessica Laflin (sophomore, Phoenix, Ariz., Horizon Honors HS) had five kills each. Setter Claire Stewart (sophomore, Colorado Springs, Colo., Classical Academy) had 12 assists and libero Tori Zempel (freshman, La Porte City, Union Community HS) tallied 15 digs.
“This team is capable,” coach Kent Clayberg said. “It’s just a matter of getting over that hump. Once we do that, good things will come.”
Saturday the Dutch (1-10) square off against Rockford College (Ill.) at 10 a.m. and Grinnell at 4 p.m. In Friday’s nightcap, Rockford (3-10) rallied from a 2-0 deficit and defeated Grinnell (2-12) with a 17-15 fifth set.
“We come back tomorrow and we try to control some more of the variables that we just couldn’t control tonight,” Clayberg said. “Hopefully we can get a little momentum going and we can start to build on that.”
